How to Prevent Pressure Sores in Hospice Patients

A majority of hospice home care patients have limited mobility. Because of this, most of them tend to be bedridden. Some of them still have the opportunity to regain their physical functions, while the rest may not be able to do so. Most of the latter are bedridden. Their impaired mobility makes it a little too difficult for them to move around and do daily routines.

Their physical condition makes life complicated for bedridden patients. What seems simple for others to do can already be a huge challenge for them. The struggle is even greater for seniors. Their deteriorating health does nothing to improve their situation. When it comes to elderly care in Los Angeles, it is significant to consider the frail condition of seniors.

Bedridden patients are going through various obstacles because of their impaired mobility. Even worse, there is a huge tendency that their condition could lead to other health complications. A concrete example of this is pressure sores. It is the result of the lack of mobility. If they are left unattended, pressure sores could lead to infections. These are unarguably the last thing that any patient of hospice care in California would want to encounter.

Although most bedridden patients experience pressure sores, it doesn’t mean it’s unavoidable. Preventing pressure sores is just simple. Below is a list of guidelines:

  • Change positions at least every two hours.
  • Monitor for any sign of developing pressure sores.
  • Keep the skin moisturized by applying moisture barrier cream.
  • Use smooth specialty beddings that are made of silk or cotton.
  • Drink at least 2 liters of water daily.
